Prescot & Odyssey skipper Talbot on his side’s promising start to Comp life

Prescot & Odyssey celebrate promotion to the Comp

As the Love Lane Liverpool Competition’s newest side, Prescot & Odyssey are settling into life in Division Two.

And skipper Graham Talbot wants to keep making life hard for the more established clubs.

Last Saturday’s nailbiting draw with Norley Hall – all four results were possible ahead of the last ball – was their third stalemate out of eight games.

But a week earlier they inflicted leaders Ainsdale’s only defeat of the season so far.

Talbot believes that result shows what his side are capable of.

He said: “I’m really pleased so far. The most important thing was that I wanted us to compete – we’re doing that, which is great.

“We’ve won two and drawn three, and we’re the only team that’s beaten the league leaders.

“And in the games we’ve lost, we competed in them, scoring 230-odd. I’m pretty pleased with where we are.

“We’re three weeks from half-way, then after that we’ll have seen all the opposition.

“Going into the second half of the season, I just want us to keep competing with everybody. “The target is to try to get as high as we can in the table, going game by game, making it difficult for the opposition.”

It hasn’t been all plain sailing for P&O, with several injuries affecting availability.

Wicketkeeper Steven Donoghue has just returned from a broken finger – Matthew Morrison impressed in his absence but has now suffered a dislocated knee, ruling him out for a long time.

Talbot added: “I’ve had a few key players with hamstring injuries.

“So in the first six weeks, we’ve had six injuries. But you’ve got to get on with it.”

Two of P&O’s big winter signings – Harsh Shonak, snapped up from Rainford, and ex-Highfield man Hedley Molyneux – are currently in the division’s top five scorers.

“Harsh and Hedley have been fantastic,” added Talbot.

“And Hedley’s bowling has been a bonus, he’s had some injuries but he’s bowling with real pace now.”
